Ports of Seattle and Tacoma Form Alliance

  The Ports of Seattle and Tacoma are ending decades of rivalry. At a news conference Tuesday commissioners of the ports announced they will form an alliance. The ports are joining so they can fight new competitors together. Tacoma and Seattle squabbled for decades. But new pressures are now bringing them together.

Pinball In America - From A New York Ban To Northwest Fans

When you first walk in to the annual Northwest Pinball and Arcade Show in Tacoma, you’re greeted by a wall of sound. It’s the loud rocket-engine hum of hundreds of people, pinball machines and arcade cabinets.

Get up close and you’ll pick up some familiar sounds – Ken’s cries of “Shoryuken!” in Street Fighter, Shao Khan’s laughter in Mortal Kombat, Mario’s famous jump and even the “wakka wakka wakka” of Pac-Man devouring pellets. And of course the sounds of flippers flipping, spinners spinning, and silver balls hitting bells.

From The Top Auditions Due

From The Top joins Northwest Public Radio April 24 in Tacoma's Rialto Theater.

Aquarium In Tacoma To Let Visitors Dive In Shark Tank

Beginning Friday an aquarium in Tacoma will let paying visitors dive in a shark-infested tank.

Beginning Friday an aquarium in Tacoma will let paying visitors dive in a shark-infested tank. That's right. The Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium has built a dive cage in a tank that is home to 17 sharks. Experienced SCUBA divers can even swim out into the center of the pool.

How Did Tacoma, Wash., Get To Be America's 'Gayest City'?

Tacoma, Wash., tops The Advocate magazine's list of "Gayest Cities in America." It was followed by Springfield, Mass., and Spokane, Wash. Advocate editor Matthew Breen says marriage equality gave the advantage to cities in Washington state this year.

Every year when The Advocate magazine publishes its list of the "Gayest Cities in America" it comes with a few surprises. This year was no different.

At the top of the list for 2013: Tacoma, Wash.

To Tacoma resident Ellen Cohen, the superlative was unexpected.

"In all of Tacoma coming out as No. 1 in anything would surprise me," she said.

WA And OR National Guard Soldiers Headed To Afghanistan

JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. – They're leaving their jobs and their families to spend a year in Afghanistan. Nearly one hundred and fifty Washington and Oregon National Guard members will deploy this summer. Monday Governor Chris Gregoire led a formal farewell ceremony for the Washington citizen-soldiers. Cindy Rue's son is a helicopter mechanic and back-up gunner. He's been to Afghanistan before.
