Washington Supreme Court Hears Arguments In Backpage Case

The fate of a human trafficking lawsuit against Backpage.com is now in the hands of the Washington Supreme Court. The justices heard oral arguments Tuesday in a case that involves three underage victims of sex trafficking.

The lawsuit alleges the Washington girls were pimped-out through ads posted to Backpage.com. Erik Bauer is a lawyer for the victims. He argues Backpage has created a sex marketplace where human trafficking can flourish.

FBI Sweep Helps Rescue Northwest Children Forced Into Prostitution

Over the last few days you may have heard about the rescue of 105 children from sex trafficking. the FBI – in cooperation with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and local tasks forces conducted the sting. The FBI also worked with local police agencies- and helped recover victims who have been forced into prostitution and made arrests.

Senator Wyden Asks FBI For Sex Trafficking Data

Oregon Senator Ron Wyden is asking the FBI to release data that some say could shed light on the murky world of child sex trafficking. Wyden made the request in letter addressed to FBI Director Robert Mueller. The Senator wants the FBI to release data on nearly 500 murders committed along the nation's highways. Most of the victims were women. Half of them are believed to have been prostitutes.

Backpage.com Sues Washington State

The online classifieds website Backpage.com filed a lawsuit against the state of Washington Monday. It’s over a bill passed by the legislature this year, which aims to reduce sex trafficking.

Village Voice Media owns the national online classifieds site Backpage.com. The company also owns the Seattle Weekly, and they run their online classifieds through Backpage. Seattle police say they have caught pimps selling underage girls…at Backpage.com.

Now, the company is suing Washington state.

Wash. At Leading Edge Of Anti Sex Trafficking Laws

A dozen anti-human trafficking bills were signed into law by Governor Chris Gregoire.

Washington State took another step Thursday to protect minors from sexual exploitation through online ads. Overall a dozen anti-human trafficking bills were signed into law by Governor Chris Gregoire.

One of the laws is aimed directly at sex ad publishers, like backpage.com, which has so far refused to verify age in its escort ads.
