"Can a cholesterol-conscious matron from the west side find happiness at the East Side Dairy Queen?" So begins Marilyn Hagerty's review of the national creamery franchise for her local paper, The Grand Forks Herald, in Grand Forks, N.D.

The 87-year-old Hagerty has reported on food, events, and local profiles at the Herald for more than 25 years, but she earned 15 minutes of national fame last year with a positive review of her local Olive Garden restaurant.

Online Reviews Make Big Difference To Small Businesses

Northwest cities, including Seattle and Portland, are awash in great restaurants. And these venues must compete for attention from a highly discerning crowd. Online rating sites such as Yelp, Google and FourSquare are making those customers even more discriminating. You can even pick up those reviews as you walk down the street. That’s great for some small business, but as journalist Julia Flucht reports, there are some downsides.

Washington Restaurants Changing The Way They Buy Liquor

State liquor stores will shut down as Washington privatizes liquor sales.

SEATTLE, Wash. -- Washington restaurateurs are preparing for a new option that begins March first: They’ll be able to buy liquor directly from distilleries and out-of-state distributors. It’s one part of the new roll out of Initiative 1183, passed by voters in November. As correspondent Anna King reports, Some restaurants are waiting to see how the new marketplace shapes up, others are aggressively hunting down deals.
