Portland Prepares For Fluoride Vote 

Oregon citizens will soon vote on water fluoridation.

This month, voters will decide whether to approve a plan to fluoridate Portland's water. Supporters say Portland children - especially in low-income families - suffer aggravated dental problems because the city has chosen not to add fluoride. Opponents say water fluoridation is the wrong way to address a public health problem. And so a battle that has played out before at the state level is now going on in Portland. From Oregon Public Broadcasting, April Baer reports.

Portland Employee Faces Terrorism Charge

Portland city employee Reaz Qadir Khan was arrested Tuesday on charges of conspiring to provide "material support" to terrorists.  As Kristian Foden-Vencil reports, the US Department of Justice alleges he helped a terrorist plan a deadly suicide attack in Lahore, Pakistan in 2009.

Mall Shooting Victim Expected To Survive

Two people, plus the suspected shooter, are dead after police say a gunman opened fire at a crowded shopping mall in suburban Portland Tuesday. An ambulance took one survivor of the attack to OHSU Medical Center in Portland. The young woman is expected to survive. Correspondent Chris Lehman reports.

Six hours of last-ditch negotiations have yielded a tentative agreement for the Port of Portland and a Longshore union that represents security guards at some marine terminals. This averts a strike that was scheduled to bring work to a halt Sunday.

Hales Wins Landslide In Portland Mayoral Race

Voters have chosen Charlie Hales as Portland's next Mayor. Unofficial results show Hales coasting to a 62 percent lead over Jefferson Smith, with a significant write-in vote at nearly 8 percent.

Portland Moves Forward On Fluoridation

Portland City Council has unanimously approved fluoridating the city's water system. April Baer of Oregon Public Broadcasting reports, a challenge to the plan has already been set in motion. 

About a dozen signs dotted the room, with opposition slogans like "Public water, public vote." Several hecklers were thrown out.

Council members including Amanda Fritz said they felt some concerns raised by opponents were valid.

Fluoridation On Tap For Portland City Council

Wednesday the Portland City Council is expected to pass an ordinance to add fluoride to the municipal water system. Anti-fluoridation groups have been outspoken in their opposition to the move but Mayor Sam Adams and two commissioners have already voiced their support, ensuring a majority on the five-member panel.

Kimberly Kaminski is Director of "Clean Water Portland." Her group opposes adding fluoride to city water supplies.
