DHS Report Raises Questions About Child Protections

An internal report by the Oregon Department of Human Services found a number of problems in the way the state investigates cases of child abuse. DHS reviewed about 100 cases in counties around the state. In nearly half of them, the reviewer did not agree with the case worker’s conclusion that the children were safe.

Working for Oregon's Department of Human Services is stressful. That's one of the findings of an agency-wide survey released Wednesday by the Oregon Secretary of State's office.

Attorneys who represent two Oregon foster children are suing the Department of Human Services. The lawyers say DHS violates state and federal law by housing some children in hotels and offices.
