Seattle is known for its love of coffee but as Pacific Northwesterners know, it's a passion not unique to the West Side. So how did coffee become such a Northwest staple?

Starbucks may be the first entity people think of as an answer to this question. And although Starbucks did play a significant role in the eventual coffee craze, the Northwest’s history with the beverage goes deeper than that.

Some Northwest lawmakers want you to be able to drive faster. Bills in both Oregon and Washington would increase the speed limit on some sections of highway.

We get a lot of great photos submitted to our Tumblr page. One of the reasons we get so many - other than our amazing listeners - is that the Northwest is gorgeous. It might be the most beautiful place in America. Here are some examples:

New statistics out Monday from the FBI show violent crime continued to decrease in Washington, Oregon and Idaho. That’s consistent with the general trend in crime rates nationwide. However, there are a few notable exceptions in the Northwest that may be of interest to car owners.

Both Idaho and Washington saw an increase in car thefts in 2013, Idaho in particular. It’s up by 12 percent over the previous year.

Each day now, travelers are arriving home to the Northwest who may have been exposed to Ebola .

In Oregon, a woman who has come back from West Africa was hospitalized Friday with a fever. But the ink isn’t yet dry on Washington, Oregon and Idaho’s policies on how to isolate these travelers. And the hustle is on to adequately train healthcare workers.

Oregon state officials said they have fully adopted the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention protocol. The state has also adapted its own CDC based algorithm to access someone’s risk level of developing Ebola.

HBO is planning a new six-hour miniseries on the Lewis and Clark expedition. And it's searching the Northwest for one of the most famous and beloved figures in the saga – the role of Sacagawea.

She was the young Native American mother who helped the Corps of Discovery reach the Pacific. This miniseries may do something previous productions haven't – cast a Native American actress in the role.

The city of Ashland passed a resolution Tuesday night supporting divestment from the fossil fuel industry. It joins Eugene as the only other Northwest city to take this kind of action to fight climate change.

The scope of the resolution is limited.

Kenneth Carper uploaded his first photograph to the My Park Photos website last May and this photo is now Photo of the Year. Carper says it was "beginner's luck" in his biography on the site, but it's clear that he has a true talent in photography.

The coast has generally been considered the area of the Northwest most at risk for a catastrophic oil spill. But the rise in oil moving through the region by rail has raised the stakes for some inland areas. As Jessica Robinson reports, three counties in the northern tip of Idaho are now creating their own strategy for containing an oil spill.

Changing wind patterns are to blame for warming temperatures in the Northwest, according to the study. Climatologist James Johnstone was the lead author, and he says, "Basically all of the warming in the Northeast Pacific ocean has been wind driven."
