Late last year, Gov. John Kitzhaber issued a moratorium that put on hold the execution of twice-convicted murderer Gary Haugen. Now the death row inmate is asking a judge to overrule that reprieve. Haugen appeared in a Marion County courtroom Tuesday.

In the wake of the movie theater shooting in Colorado, theater owners have to consider something many have given little thought to in the past. Security. One big company, AMC Theaters, said Friday it will ban costumes and masks from its 300-plus movie houses. And the National Association of Theater Owners says it’s reviewing all security procedures.

Not as many people are dying from prescription drug overdoses in Washington, but heroin abuse appears to be spiking higher. Those figures come from an annual report on drug abuse in the state. Researchers studied death reports, police reports, help-line phone calls and treatment records. And the picture this year shows heroin is making a comeback. Use of the drug peaked in the 90s, but since then it's been mostly confined to aging drug-addicts.
