In the Tri Cities, a Kamiakin High School rising senior won a statewide art award.   Margot Massey’s painting is titled  “Georgia On My Mind,” and Massey found out her work won the award when the Office of the Superintendent for Public Instruction shared a video about the statewide student art show.

“It got up to the state level and then Governor Inslee voted it Governor’s Choice Award…So I was really excited about winning   that…it was really COOL COOL.”

The High School Art Show is the final stop in a process that begins in classrooms across Washington. Artwork is sent to the regional level for judging and awards before heading to the state level.

Massey’s painting shows ripe peaches against a blue bird sky with the reflection of the warm sun on the fruit.

“ I was inspired by just spring and the weather changing, you know summer coming. I wanted to make something with a lot of bright colors that I could hang up in the house.”

Before the painting can be hung in Margot Massey’s house though, Governor Inslee will display it in Olympia for a year.
