Over the past decade, Seattle and King County have seen a big spike in the number of people experiencing homelessness.

A new report from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development shows an increase in homelessness nationwide for the first time since 2010. The report suggests the increase is due to surging homeless populations on the West Coast.

For the first time last year, the majority of new homes built in Seattle were built “green.” That’s according to the local homebuilders association. Portland home builders are also going for healthy, energy-efficient construction in a big way.

Oregon Gov. Kate Brown has appointed Margaret Salazar as the new head of the state agency that handles works to provide affordable housing. The announcement was made as lawmakers gear up to tackle housing issues during next year's legislative session.

Portland’s home values are the fast growing in the country.

According to a report released Tuesday, home values appreciated nearly 12 percent from last January to this January.

HUD Secretary Announces New Round Of Funding For Housing For Homeless Vets

  A new initiative from the U.S. Housing and Urban Development department will help homeless veterans with mental health issues find housing. HUD Secretary Julián Castro made the announcement in Seattle today.

HUD is partnering with the department of Veterans Affairs to help get veterans connected to housing and to VA services.

This new round of money will help about 9-thousand veterans across the country. That's about a fifth of the overall population of homeless veterans in the U.S.
