Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber is expected to announce a re-election bid Monday. The Democrat has scheduled an announcement Monday morning at a Portland elementary school where he says he'll discuss his plans for the coming year.

Oregon’s special election concludes next week, and in Curry County on the south coast, voters will decide on a tax increase. The county is facing a $2 million budget shortfall, and it could be the first place Governor Kitzhaber declares a public safety fiscal emergency.

Governors John Kitzhaber of Oregon and Jay Inslee of Washington joined Gov. Jerry Brown of California and British Columbia Premier Christy Clark at a news conference in San Francisco. Together, they announced a shared set of goals for reducing carbon emissions in the region.

While gridlock continues in Washington, D.C., tensions have also surfaced in Salem. Oregon's special session hasn't gone according to plan.

Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber says he'll call lawmakers back to Salem this month for a special session on taxes and public pensions.

Oregon lawmakers could return to the capitol later this month for a Special Session to vote on public pensions and taxes. Governor John Kitzhaber made that announcement Wednesday, but it’s not a done deal.

Kitzhaber says he'll call lawmakers in on September 30 -- but only if he's confident there are enough votes to pass a deal on raising taxes and cutting public pensions. The money raised and saved would go toward public schools.

Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber has vetoed a bill that would ease a ban on Native American mascots. It was the last bill the Democrat needed to act on following this year's legislative session.

Fifteen Oregon schools use Native American mascots like Warriors, Indians and Braves. Last year, the state Board of Education voted to give those schools until 2017 to get rid of them.

But Oregon lawmakers voted last month to allow school districts to keep their mascots if the nearest American Indian tribe agrees. The governor's veto pen nullifies that move.

Governor Kitzhaber and both Oregon US senators received a briefing Saturday in Glendale on the wildfires burning in Southern Oregon. Local, state, and federal agencies informed community members and state legislators on the status of the Douglas Complex Fires.

Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber plans to resume his tour of the state later this month in his push for a special session on taxes and public pensions. But it's not clear yet whether his efforts to gather grassroots support will convince lawmakers to come back to the capitol.

Kitzhaber says a special session could happen as soon as next month to vote on a package of bills that would raise some taxes and slash benefits to public retirees.
