The Retro Cocktail Hour

The Retro Cocktail Hour is our weekly nod to the Space Age Pop revival: an hour of Space Age Pop, Bachelor Pad Music, Exotica, Lounge Music and Cocktail Jazz. Here you'll find vintage recordings from the dawn of the Hi-Fi Era - imaginative, light-hearted (and sometimes light-headed) pop stylings designed to underscore everything from the backyard barbecue to the high-tech bachelor pad. Host Darrell Brogdon serves up an hour of incredibly strange music from the program's home at Kansas Public Radio. So grab a cocktail shaker and join us for The Retro Cocktail Hour.

From the late 1940s through the early '60s, the space race spawned a short-lived genre of "outer space exotica". Although the music on these records was often considerably less adventurous than the album covers promised, it's an fascinating mix of instrumental pop, electronic gadgetry, big band swing, movie music and garden variety elevator music. Here's a sampling of some memorable "space" records.
