Washington Motorcycle Trooper Killed On Traffic Detail Related To Bridge Collapse
A Washington State Patrol trooper has died after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a box truck late Friday afternoon in Skagit County. Trooper Sean O’Connell was on a special assignment related to the collapse of the Skagit River I-5 bridge.
The State Patrol says Trooper O’Connell had been checking on the length of the back-up on one of the detour routes related to the collapse of the Skagit River bridge, when he collided with a box truck and was thrown from his motorcycle.
In a statement, the Chief of the State Patrol says "We not only lost a great trooper, but a great human being. Sean was known around the department and the community for both his sense of humor and sense of compassion.”
Trooper Sean O’Connell was 38 years old. He leaves behind a wife and two young children.
The Washington State Patrol is seeking witnesses to the accident. The driver of the box truck is cooperating with investigators.
The last Washington trooper to die in the line of duty was Tony Radulescu. He was shot to death during a traffic stop in February of 2012.
