Washington Attorney Says Tukwila Hotels Were Seized Because Ofn Widespread Crime
Western Washington's U.S. Attorney says three motels in Tukwila were seized yesterday ,-following a long-term investigation into alleged criminal activity.
U.S. Attorney Jenny Durkan says the three motels, identified as the Boulevard Motel, Travelers Choice Motel and the Great Bear Motor Inn, account for almost 17 percent of all crime calls in Tukwila over the last two years.
There were several arrests made, and Durkan says more are expected. Almost 400 federal, state and local law enforcement officers were involved in the investigation and operation.
Durkan says the owners of the motels were aware of crimes happening at their businesses, like prostitution and drug offenses.
“These hotel owners had a lot of opportunity to clean up their act, they decided not to do it. Instead, they knowingly profited from criminal activity that was occurring in their motels. They now know that there is a consequence for that. And the consequence is that we’ll have criminal prosecutions and we’ll also seize the hotels" says Durkan.
Durkan says the motels have been boarded up, and paperwork has been filed to turn them over to the federal government to become something she says will be “positive to the community”.
Some people live in the motels, and social service agencies were reportedly on hand to help them find new homes.
The raids were authorized by a federal warrant that was issued yesterday morning.
