Jewell has been CEO of the R.E.I. Corporation, an avid mountaineer and former oil company executive.

Before the vote, Washington U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell explained why she believes Jewell is the perfect person for the job.

"She represents a balanced person, who not only knows how to help a growing business like she did, or serve on the Board of Regents, also worked on the non-partisan National Conservation Parks Association. But she has been everything in business from dealing to oil fields in Oklahoma to commercial banking to, of late, running REI, one of our most successful companies in the Pacific Northwest," Cantwell says.

The vote was 87 senators in favor, and 11 opposed.
