UO Athletic Director Responds To Coach Kelly’s Departure

Jan 17, 2013

The University of Oregon is looking for a new head football coach. Chip Kelly announced Wednesday he’s leaving for the NFL to lead the Philadelphia Eagles. UO Athletic Director Rob Mullens says player recruiting is underway so this is a less than ideal time for Kelly to leave. Mullens describes what they’ll be looking for in a new coach.

Mullens: “You know, what we want is someone who understands the culture, it is unique here not only within our football program but within our community. Want someone who has proven excellence, who has been around winning programs who knows what it takes because the expectations for this program have shifted. And we want to compete for PAC-12 championships, and we want to be in BCS bowls and so we want someone who understands what that takes.”

Mullens says Coach Kelly has been great for Oregon football and has left it in a better place. The school is facing possible NCAA sanctions for the use of recruiting services.
