Seattle Mayor Ed Murray has announced he's staying out of the already crowded race for mayor. Murray was considering a run as a write-in candidate, but said today he decided against it. Instead, the out-going mayor is backing one of the 21 candidates, former U.S. Attorney Jenny Durkan.
"While I would love nothing more that to be mayor for another term, I have decided it is time for me to pass the torch to the next leader who will build upon the legacy of progressive achievements that we have achieved,” Murray said. “That candidate is Jenny Durkan."
Murray dropped out of the race in May amidst sexual assault allegations against him. He denies those allegations, which go back to the 1980s.
Murray said a poll his team recently conducted showed his path to win was narrow.
Ballots for the primary are due on August 1st. The top two vote getters advance to the general election.
