Robb Akey was fired as head football coach at the University of Idaho Sunday.
Whenever you saw Robb Akey out and about, whether it was on the streets of Moscow, going through security at the airport in Boise, he was unfailingly upbeat and positive.
That was true last week, for example, in his most recent appearance on the weekly sports television program called “Inside the Vandals,” when he described a disappointing loss to Texas State.
Akey: “We’ve done well for periods of time, but we need to do it well more consistently.”
In the end, however, there was more optimism than there were victories for the Vandal football team in recent years. Akey was released from his position as head coach on Sunday, a day after the team’s seventh loss of the season.
In a statement, the UI said that while it appreciated Akey’s enthusiasm and dedication it felt this was the right time to make the move so that the university can immediately begin the process of hiring a new coach for next season.
