The Oregon State Police broke ground on a memorial Wednesday to honor fallen Oregon state troopers. A crowd of dignitaries listened somberly as the officers’ names were read aloud.
The monument will feature a polished stone wall with the names of 33 Oregon officers who have been killed in the line of duty. It will be located outside the State Police headquarters on the Capitol Mall in Salem.
Actual construction of the privately-funded memorial won't begin until fundraising goals are met. Organizers say they're about halfway toward their goal of $233,000.
