A patient was found dead early Tuesday at a psychiatric hospital in eastern Washington, leading to the arrest of patient in the same unit. The woman in custody is suspected of murder.

The 56-year-old man was found dead at about 2:45 a.m. on the floor of his room at Eastern State Hospital in Medical Lake. Its one of two state-owned adult psychiatric hospitals.

30 year old Amber Roberts was arrested for murder, according to Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputy Craig Chamberlin. Both Roberts and the male patient resided in the forensics unit, for people with criminal charges.

Deputy Chamberlin spoke with patients who live in the unit.

Chamberlin: “They were extremely upset. I was very impressed, they are a very tight knit group of folks that reside on that floor, at the hospital… they take incidents like this very personal, and they have a lot of respect not only for the staff, but also, they feel very fortunate about where they’re at.”

All patients were moved off the ward while forensics and major crimes detectives conducted a search.

Chamberlin says the victim’s identity and the nature of his death will be released once the medical examiner’s office completes an autopsy.
