Investigators Look Into Whether Construction Sparked Taylor Bridge Fire

Aug 16, 2012

Fire officials in central Washington are investigating whether construction at a bridge near Cle Elum sparked the 23,000 acre wildfire there. Incident commanders won’t say definitively what started the fire. But they do say the blaze was human caused and it began near the bridge construction site.

Meanwhile, the fire is about 25 percent contained, but incident spokesman Randy Shepard says crews have 40 miles of fire line to build.

“So it’s a long distance around this fire," Shepard says. "We have a considerable amount that looks reasonably secure but it isn’t completely to standard. So we can make progress rather quickly but there are some other areas that are going to be a little more stubborn, a little more difficult.”

Around 900 firefighters are on the scene. Fire officials report two injuries from the blaze: one minor burn and case of heat exhaustion.
