A public comment period ended Monday in the environmental review of the Millennium coal export project in Longview, Washington. Officials have collected 163 thousand comments so far.
It's the highest number of comments received on any of the coal export projects proposed for the Northwest. A similar project being considered for Bellingham, Wash. generated 125,000 comments earlier this year. The Millennium project would export coal from Wyoming and Montana to Asia. Three agencies are taking comments on which environmental impacts they should study before permitting begins. Linda Kent is a spokeswoman for the Washington Department of Ecology. She says she doesn’t know how long it will take for her agency to consider all the comments.
Kent: “Obviously this is a large number of comments to review, so there is really not a specific set time frame. We’re going to be doing that as effectively and efficiently as we can.”
Next, the agencies will decide which environmental impacts of the project they will study.
