Crowds lined the streets of Bend Sunday to for a parade celebrating Olympic gold medalist and hometown hero, Ashton Eaton.
Eaton smiled as he waved to the throngs of people who had come out to see him. Bend started planning for this parade after Eaton won the decathlon at this summer's London Games. After the parade, Eaton climbed a stage in front of the Tower Theater, where back in August, hundreds watched a live broadcast as he crossed the finish line in the final 1,500-meter event.
Eaton: "There's this thing hanging around my neck. It is mine. I worked hard for it. But guess what, I didn't learn how to work hard and get this kind of stuff by myself. I learned how to get one of these things from you guys."
After receiving the "key to the city," Eaton wrapped up the day by signing autographs and leading a "fun run" for kids 10 and under through the city's downtown.
