How does a student become an international journalist? At The Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at Washington State University, the Backpack Journalism program sends students overseas to report on nonprofits dedicated to improving the lives of those in Latin America. In March of 2012, Backpack Journalists Stephanie Schendel and Andrea Marie Castillo traveled to Central America. Andrea was with a group of World Vets volunteers in Nicaragua. Read her blog. Stephanie was with Hearts in Motion surgical team in Guatemala. Read her posts here. Both students produced a variety of multi-media reports, which were distributed to regional news organizations on their return.
