State Board Officially Hires New UO President

The Oregon State Board of Higher Education formally hired Michael Gottfredson as president of the University of Oregon.

The State Board of Higher Education has formally hired Michael Gottfredson to lead the University of Oregon. He was appointed president Friday.

Dr. Gottfredson has been a senior administrator at the University of California, Irvine for 12 Years. He says his first order of business is to get to know the University of Oregon better.

“There’s one overwhelming impression, great enthusiasm for the University of Oregon from every quarter: faculty, students, community," Gottfredson says. "I had very high expectations and they have been exceeded in every way.”

Michael Gottfredson Picked As Finalist For UO President

Dr. Michael Gottfredson has served as Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost at the University of California Irvine since 2000.

Dr. Michael Gottfredson has been selected as the finalist for the new president of the University of Oregon.

Gottfredson has served as Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost at the University of California Irvine since 2000. He is an expert in criminology. Oregon University System Chancellor George Pernsteiner calls Gottfredson an academic leader of distinction.

"That's a great combination for Oregon," Pernsteiner says. "Somebody who is committed to higher education and has a track record of real success and is able to work collaboratively with the other elements of education in this state for the betterment of the state and its citizens."

Harry & David Will Bring Seasonal Call Center Back to Eugene

Harry & David will be bringing its seasonal call center back to Eugene this year. They'll employ 700 to 800 people from November through mid-December.

Harry & David shut down their Eugene call center in 2010 and 2011, when it was going through financial hardship.

Darren Prescott is Vice President for Customer Care. He says the company tried outsourcing.

Crews will break ground this week on a new high school in Waldport on the Oregon coast. The existing school is in a tsunami zone. The new location will be on higher ground.

Oregon Extends Deadline For Studded Tires

Studded tires are responsible for $40 million dollars in Oregon road damage each year.

Oregon drivers have an extra week before they must remove studded tires from their vehicles. The Oregon Department of Transportation extended the season through April 9th. The traditional deadline is April 1.
Weather forecasts are calling for difficult driving conditions in snow zones during the first week of April.

One of the movies up for Best Documentary at the Academy Awards Sunday has a strong connection to the Northwest.

"If a Tree Falls: The Story of the Earth Liberation Front" tells of Daniel McGowan, a young man from New York who came to Eugene, Oregon to engage in environmental activism. McGowan was involved in a couple of arson fires sparked in the name of ELF.
