KVTI Temporarily Operating At Reduced Power

The NPR and Classical Music service in the Tacoma area on KVTI 90.9, is currently running at reduced power.

Some parts in the aging transmitter stopped working. We are broadcasting with a lower power backup transmitter to keep the signal on the air while we obtain parts from the transmitter manufacturer.

Our engineers hope to receive the replacement parts and restore the signal to full power in about a week.

Apparent Explosions Rock Boston Marathon Finish Line

Two explosions rocked the finish line of the Boston Marathon this afternoon, leaving at least three dead and dozens injured, the Boston Police Department reports.

The explosions happened in quick succession four hours after the beginning of the race, the world's oldest and one of the most prestigious road races in the world. At that point, the majority of 27,000 runners had crossed the finish line.

Bellingham Translator Briefly Off Air Tonight

The translator carrying our NPR News service to the Bellingham area on 104.7 FM will be off the air for about an hour beginning at 8 PM. This is to allow the owners of the site to carry out maintenance work.

During this outage, Bellingham listeners can still tune in to the NPR News service online on this page. Another choice is to tune in to the NPR and Classical Music service at 91.7 FM, KZAZ.

Spring Solar Outages May Affect Radio Signals

Solar outage time is here again. Twice a year, the sun moves into a position directly into the line of sight between an earth station and a satellite. When this happens, for a few minutes each day solar radiation may distort satellite signals, You maybe hear your radio signal becoming fuzzy, you might hear static, or the signal possibly become silent. This spring, the interruptions are most likely between February 28 and March 4, at about 10:38 AM each day.

You won’t have to do anything. Just wait a few minutes and your signal will be back to normal.

Further Repairs Needed To Restore Bellingham Signals

The replacement parts installed on Wednesday night at KZAZ are still not producing usable HD signals, so 91.7 continues to broadcast in FM, and the translator at 104.7 is still airing the NPR and Classical Music service.

While engineers are working with the transmitter manufacturer on the problematic parts, they are

also trying to devise a workaround to bring the NPR News service to 104.7 as soon as possible.

Northwest Public Radio Celebrates 90 Years Of Service

We are celebrating the 90th anniversary of Northwest Public Radio’s first station going on the air - December 10, 1922 from the campus of Washington State University. KFAE (later changed to KWSC and then KWSU) 1250 AM is one of the oldest and largest university-owned radio stations in the United States. At the inaugural broadcast, among the stated goals of the station where: “…to provide an information and cultural service to a wide area of population”. We are proud that 90 years later our core mission is unchanged.
