The U.S. Forest Service has identified a firefighter killed in Idaho on Sunday as 20-year-old Anne Veseth, of Moscow, Idaho. She was struck by a falling tree at the Steep Corner Fire southeast of Coeur d’Alene. As Jessica Robinson reports, firefighting deaths fluctuate from year to year, but the biggest source of that danger has shifted.

Memories of TV Clown JP Patches

All over Western Washington, Baby-boomers who grew up watching TV here are remembering J.P. Patches. The TV clown whose real name was Chris Wedes passed away Sunday at the age of 84.

His popular kids program was broadcast on KIRO TV for 24 years, and for some of that time, it was on not once a day, but twice. Wedes shared that story in 2001 with KUOW’s Dave Beck.

Later this month, the Lucky Friday Mine in north Idaho will begin rehiring workers. It closed seven months ago for federally mandated safety improvements. Inspectors took a sharper look at the mine after a series of tragic accidents last year. Now, as the mine prepares to re-open, the family of one dead miner is speaking out for the first time.
