A Book for All Seasons

Kalpakian American Cookery by Laura Kalpakian

Care for some pork loin roast or true English plum pudding? How about a character whose creation recipe includes a twist of strong-willed Mormon grandmother, a handful of spunky, action-driven aunt, a dash of handsome cowboy, a bit of war, some grated travel? Whip continuously for several hours, let stand and you get Eden Douglass, a woman whose life has been shaped by those she meets on her tumultuous journey across continents. Author/chef Laura Kalpakian has created a full course meal in American Cookery, an earthy compassionate soulful look at the powerful influence of those in our lives we merely bump into and/or truly embrace.

Ordinary Wolves by Seth Kantner published by Milkweed Editions

This is a novel about an Alaska that most of don’t know.  The author grew up in the Alaska Arctic wilderness; and was raised on the land as are the characters in this, his first novel.  This is a cold, bleak existence that is also filled with family, love and friendships.  Reading Ordinary Wolves was a stunning experience.  The novel won the Milkweed National Fiction prize.

Our choice is submitted by Sue Domis, a great Inklings staff member.
