Live at Central Washington University, in commemoration of Holocaust Remembrance week, Music of Remembrance (MOR) chamber music organization presents works composed by some of the most gifted victims of Nazi persecution. Composers Gideon Klein and Robert Dauber were inmates at the infamous concentration camp Terezin. You'll hear Klein's vibrant, melodic Trio, written just nine days before his transport to Auschwitz, and Dauber's café-like Serenata. The audaciously original Erwin Schulhoff was sent not to Terezin but to a camp in Bavaria, where he perished in 1942. Schulhoff's music--banned as "degenerate" by the Nazi regime--united dance, jazz and folk song melodies in string quartets that only now are gaining the recognition they merit. Also on the bill are Hungarian composer László Weiner's sparkling Duo for violin and viola and contemporary composer Simon Sargon's hauntingly ethereal Before the Ark.
Some of Seattle's leading instrumentalists violinists Mikhail Shmidt and Leonid Keylin, violist Susan Gulkis Assadi, and cellist Mara Finkelstein join Miller, who is also a concert pianist.
A pre-concert lecture by Dr. Mina Miller on "Music and the Holocaust", will occur from 5:00 - 6:00pm in the CWU Music Building (exact room TBA).
